Welcome to SpamIsBad.Com!
A Wisconsin Internet Community Against Spam

Our goal is to feed the growing consciousness against e-mail spam. Legislation is inevitable and we should all be informed and ensure that our representatives are informed. Please become a member and contribute to this Wisconsin Internet Community against spam. Help fight back!

After a hiatus of nearly a year, the SpamIsBad.com domain is back. For the record, during that 9 months the site was never down, but it wasn't updated either, which is pretty much the 'kiss of death' for a web site like this.

However, we're back, migrating over to the WordPress blogging software - for the immediate term, new posts will be at blog.spamisbad.com, which will get moved over to the main domain shortly.

As always, your feedback is welcome - feel free to comment on anything (it goes without saying that comment spam will be deleted!), submit news articles, etc.

Thanks for listening.

Email Security: How Much is Enough?
By Melisa Bleasdale

Although we have long since known about the virility of email threats and viruses, this year continues to supply heavily evolved and critically destructive email attacks.

According to Symantec's semi-annual Internet Security Threat Report, which was released this past September, between January 1 and June 30 of this year, a record-breaking 1,862 new vulnerabilities were documented -- 97 percent of them weighing in at moderate to high severity.

Adding to our problems, the time between vendor vulnerability disclosure and the release of an exploit decreased from 6.4 days to 6.0. On average, 54 days passed between a vulnerabilitys appearance and the release of a patch to fix it.

Doing the math, that means approximately 48 days went idly by between the exploitation of a vulnerability and the means with which to fix it.

Botnet operation controlled 1.5m PCs
Tom Sanders in California ...

A recently foiled botnet operation has turned out to be 15 times larger that police initially thought.

On further investigation, authorities found that the operation had put about 1.5 million computers and servers under its control. The crime ring was thought to have created a botnet of 100,000 systems, which they claimed was the largest ever detected.

A botnet is a collection of computers infected with a computer worm which puts the system under the worm creator's control without the owner's knowledge.

Botnets are commonly used to host illegal web content such as child pornography, to send out spam or to launch distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks.

Bill would reduce spam
...

State Rep. Brett Davis, R-Oregon, introduced a bill that would make it a crime for anyone but nonprofit organizations and the government to send e-mail solicitations that conceal the identity of the sender or attempt to defraud consumers.

The worst violators could face civil and criminal penalties, including felony charges that could draw up to $10,000 in fines and six years in prison under the bill. The penalty could increase by $10,000 if the victim is elderly or disabled.

Credit Card Consumers Paying 'Spam Charges'
Unauthorized $25 credit card charges, often referred to as "spam charges," have hit consumers nationwide.

According to a recent NBC report, the Federal Trade Commission said identity thieves work on the idea that the bogus charge is small enough that card holders will pay it without even noticing.

Victims of the fraud are urged to contact their credit card company immediately.

Direct Marketing Group Eyes Spam-Fighting Technology
...

Separate authentication technologies pushed by Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) and Yahoo (Nasdaq: YHOO) would help an Internet service provider verify that a message's sender is accurate and authorized. Spammers often use fake e-mail addresses, so those messages would fail authentication tests.

The Direct Marketing Association, in approving the requirement this week, did not say which system its members must use.

John Levine, co-author of "Fighting Spam for Dummies," said the move might make sense for marketers worried about being lumped with spammers, but users shouldn't necessarily consider it virtuous.

Google Addresses Blogger Splog Spam Blog Issue
Splogs became an overnight horror with the launch of thousands of search results and aggregator clogging spam blogs last weekend. For the most part, Google’s Blogger has been a target of Sploggers due to its “easy to spam” blog building service. Robots were building thousands of spam blogs via Blogger by automated services, despite minimal anti-spam methods used by Blogger.

Blogger has since built more spam blog barriers based on the characted recognition CAPTCHA method, and integrated such into most aspects of publishing blogs which are suspected of being splogs.

The Deadly Duo: Spam and Viruses, September 2005
...

The software security firm Symantec identified the top cities for bot-infected computers. The firm finds factors that play a role in the population of infected computers: the size of the city and the rate of broadband growth in the city. In world ranking, Cambridge, England, topped the list for occurrences of bot-infected computers. Princeton, NJ, ranked first in the U.S. list and second in the worldwide list. The firm speculates new students at large universities in both cities caused the spike in September. It also states South America may become prone to bot infection as the growth rate of high-speed Internet continues within the continent.

Various Ways to Stop Spam Deluge Dead
...

First, we can solve the problem of spam emails mainly by being more cautious handling emails from strangers. Although it may be tough to follow, not opening spam emails is a good advice to listen. Upon opening a spam email, the spammers identify the address as active, and the misery starts — the spammers spam again and again.

Opening spam emails can also drop cookies into computers and disrupt Internet browsing. So disable anything more elaborate than text previews to play it safe. It is also a good idea to keep the primary email account as invisible as possible. That means never using it to post to web forums and when signing up for anything in the Internet.

Instead, try using a spare email address from free email accounts such as Hotmail or Yahoo when signing up for stuffs in the Internet. Moreover, if a site voluntarily registered in the past sends an email regarding privacy policy changes, pay close attention and “opt-out” from the possible new types of information sharing.

However, do not send an obvious spammer a remove request because he or she might simply add the address to the “spamming list.”

US tops “Dirty Dozen” spam list
LYNNFIELD, Massachusetts - The United States continues to lead the world as the country where most of the spam originates, but was being fast caught up by China and South Korea, says that latest 'Dirty Dozen' report by security firm Sophos.

But the United States and Canada dropped the level of spam coming out of their respective countries, while the output from South Korea, China and France rose in the last six months. The percentage of spam coming out of the US dropped to 26.35 percent in the six months between April and September this year. This figure is lower than the 41.50 percent that was registered over the previous six months.
